Las Cruces Kids Get Creative with Their Emotions in New Inside Out-Inspired Art Workshop

Las Cruces, NM — September 2025 — This fall break, kids in Las Cruces will have the opportunity to explore their emotions through creativity at a week-long arts workshop inspired by the beloved movie Inside Out. Running October 6–10, 2025, and hosted by the Doña Ana Arts Council, this event invites students in grades 2nd–8th to dive into art, storytelling, and emotional growth in a supportive, fun environment.

Led by Rev. JeKaren Bell, local artist, educator, and Unitarian Universalist minister, the workshop uses age-appropriate art activities to help children recognize, understand, and express emotions such as joy, sadness, fear, anger, and love. Through painting, drawing, movement, and group sharing, participants will build emotional literacy and healthy coping skills — all while having fun and making new friends.

The program is split into two sessions to meet the developmental needs of each age group:

Grades 2nd–5th: 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Grades 6th–8th: 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM

Both sessions will take place at Doña Ana Arts Council 230 South Water Street Las Cruces, New Mexico, 88012.

The week concludes with a community celebration on Friday, featuring a vibrant art showcase of student work followed by a screening of Inside Out for families and friends.

“Helping kids name what they’re feeling — and express those feelings through art — is a powerful tool for healing and resilience,” says Rev. JeKaren Bell. “This week is about giving them the space, support, and creative freedom to do just that.”
